On 28 October 2022, OUT LGBT Well-being filed its application to join the Court proceedings in the hate speech complaint lodged by the SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) against the singer, Steve Hofmeyr, at the Equality Court, Gqeberha Division.
The matter was before the Court on 3 November 2022 for a directions hearing before the Presiding Officer, Judge Makaula. The Presiding Officer directed that the matter be postponed to 16 February 2023 to deal with OUT’s application to join the Court proceedings as a complainant and the preliminary issues raised by Steve Hofmeyr.
In his opposing papers, Steve Hofmeyr disputed the Court’s jurisdiction to hear the SAHRC’s complaint. He further alleged that the SAHRC did not comply with its internal regulations before lodging the complaint at the Court.”
