Pretoria, 8 November 2024 – OUT LGBT Well-being expresses both relief and cautious optimism at the setting of a trial date for the men accused of kidnapping and assaulting a Wits University student.
The trial will commence on 24 February 2025 and continue through 27 February 2025 in the Johannesburg Magistrates Court.
The defendants, who allegedly targeted the victim through Grindr, a popular LGBTQ+ dating app, were charged with kidnapping, attempted murder, and extortion after their arrest in September 2023.
As an organisation committed to supporting LGBTQ+ rights and safety, we have been deeply concerned by the delay in bringing this case to trial. Justice delayed is justice denied, and we recognise the emotional and psychological toll that such postponements have likely imposed on the victim and the wider LGBTQ+ community.
The extended wait for trial has left many feeling vulnerable and uncertain, underlining the importance of timely and effective responses to hate crimes.
“OUT LGBT Well-being views this case as an urgent reminder of the dangers faced by LGBTQ+ individuals online and the importance of robust legal protections. We remain hopeful that the upcoming trial will bring justice and reaffirm our collective commitment to the safety and dignity of all South Africans, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity,” says Sibonelo Ncanana, OUT’s Civil Society Engagement Officer.
We stand in solidarity with the victim and call upon the judicial system to address this case with the gravity it deserves. As we await the proceedings in February, OUT LGBT Well-being continues its commitment to advocate for increased safety measures on digital platforms and stronger protections for vulnerable communities.
