OUT welcomes approval of PrEP in South Africa

PrEP involves taking antiretroviral medication (traditionally used to treat HIV positive people) on an ongoing daily basis. It is extremely effective and has few reported serious side effects.

The World Health Organisation has previously called for the use of PrEP among sexually active gay, bisexual and men who have sex with men.

While PrEP medication is not yet offered for free at government clinics or at OUT’s Ten81 Centre it may be requested on prescription from a doctor. The Ten81 clinic can also assist clients in sourcing PrEP.

For more information about PrEP, please contact Ten81 in Pretoria on 012 430 2081.

The Ten81 Centre provides free HIV, TB, sexual health and other services uniquely tailored to the needs of the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay Bisexual and Transgender) community, MSM (Men who have Sex with Men), sex workers and injecting drug users.

Located at OUT’s offices, it is a short walk from the Hatfield Gautrain Station and is managed by two full time registered nurses.
