It is time that all provincial governments develop and implement policies related to the inclusion of sexual orientation, gender identity and sex characteristics in public and private schools.
Along with a host of other groups, OUT LGBT Well-being recently endorsed an open letter to the Western Cape Education Department which has delayed policy in this regard and thereby opened up LGBTQI+ learners to further discrimination and bullying.
The signatories called on the department “to take urgent active steps to address the bullying, marginalisation, discrimination and systemic violence that these [LGBTQI+] learners experience on a day-to-day basis on the grounds of their perceived or actual sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and/or sex characteristics.”
