Recognising that we’ve all been shaped by this reality is the first step in overcoming our own internalised homophobia.
Here are some tips on dealing with internalised homophobia:
• Recognise these feelings and the negative things you tell yourself
• Identify and address the sources of these feelings and thoughts
• Eliminate sources of homophobia in your life, where possible
• Steer clear of homophobic people as far as possible
• Spend time with LGBTIQ people and learn from them
• Surround yourself with supportive people
• Learn to love and accept yourself
• Talk to a professional
