BUILDING STRAIGHT ALLIES FORUM: WITH PFLAG

For too many LGBTI students, attending school can be a frightening experience. Many face harassment or mistreatment by colleagues or professors. These challenges are compounded in some cases by unsupportive families or friends back home.

At the forum, participants will discuss strategies for building allies in the straight community to make their school and community safer. Learn how to engage families, friends and fellow students in a constructive discussion about your identity and enlist them as supporters.

This event’s guest speaker is Jody Huckaby, the Executive Director of PFLAG (formerly Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays), which has forty years of experience building alliances between the straight and LGBTI community.

PFLAG is the United States’ largest organisation for parents, families, friends, and straight allies united with people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender

The LGBTI Forum takes place on Friday 15 August (12:00 for 13:30) at the Centre for Human Rights Classroom, Room 2-2.1, Law Building, University of Pretoria (Hatfield Campus).

A light lunch will be served. Please RSVP to carole.viljoen@up.ac.za by 13 August.
