Here are some useful tips that could help you listen better:
• Decide that you want to listen and have an open mind to really hear what the other person says
• Face the person and make eye-contact
• Minimise distractions (e.g. switch off the TV, etc.)
• Respond with interest, both verbally and non-verbally (e.g. smiling, nodding, or comments/questions to the person)
• Reflect by repeating/paraphrasing in your own words what the person has said
• Ask clarifying questions to ensure you understand
• Validate what the person has said by acknowledging the person’s problems, issues, and feelings
