Media Statement: OUT Mourns the Murder of Gqeberha Gay Man Xolani Xaka

Xolani Xaka, a 32-year-old gay man from Gqeberha, has been senselessly murdered outside his home in a suspected hate crime, underscoring the ongoing violence faced by LGBTIQ+ people across the country.

Xolani was a client of OUT’s Engage Men’s Health project, which provides sexual health services to gay and other men who have sex with men. He was also open about his sexuality with his family and community.

According to a family representative, in the early evening of 18 August, Xolani heard noises at the gate of the home that he shared with his uncle in Zwide. It has also been reported that he was called to the gate.

When he went to investigate, he was confronted by three men who repeatedly and savagely stabbed him before fleeing. It is believed that Xolani died at the scene.

While a case of murder is being investigated, OUT understands that no arrests have yet been made. Although the motive for the attack is still unclear, LGBTIQ+ people are at higher risk of violence due to social stigma and marginalisation.

“We are devastated by the news of Xolani’s horrific murder. He was a valued client and a well-liked member of the LGBTIQ+ community in the area,” says Ayanda Mgwadleka, the Engage Men’s Health Site Coordinator in Nelson Mandela Bay.

“LGBTIQ+ people should not have to live in fear of discrimination and deadly violence simply because of who they love or their gender identity,” adds Sibonelo Ncanana, OUT’s Civil Society Engagement Officer. “We call on the authorities to act with urgency to arrest and prosecute the men alleged to have callously taken another queer life.”

OUT is assisting Xolani’s uncle with psychosocial support and is providing financial assistance towards the costs of Xolani’s funeral. We extend our deepest condolences to the young man’s family, friends, and all who knew him.
