OUT provides direct health services to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, MSM, sex workers, and injecting drug users, including HIV testing, counselling, treatment and general lifestyle advice and support.

OUT has been in existence for more than 21 years and is dedicated to the building of healthy and empowered LGBT communities in South Africa and internationally, while reducing hetrosexism and homophobia in society.

OUT LGBT Well-Being was - along with TB HIV Care, the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation, Anova Health Institute, the NICD and the Division of Hepatology at UCT - one of the partners in a study on viral hepatitis in key populations in South Africa.

The study involved around 3 400 people from high risk groups, including men who have sex with men (MSM), sex workers and drug users (primarily those who inject drugs).

Once a month injection could become an HIV treatment option

People living with HIV may in the future be able to treat the virus with a once-a-month injection rather than through daily medication, potentially improving adherence rates.

Researchers have announced that a study of a long-acting monthly injection has shown that it is as effective at suppressing HIV as a daily cocktail of three drugs.

HIV treatment as prevention is effective in homosexual male couples, study finds

Results from a large study of HIV transmission risk among homosexual male couples with differing HIV status have been published in The Lancet HIV.

The study, led by the Kirby Institute at UNSW Sydney, is called Opposites Attract, and contributes to global evidence demonstrating that when the HIV-positive partner is on daily antiretroviral therapy (ART) and has an undetectable viral load, the risk of sexual transmission to the HIV-negative partner is effectively zero.

WHO decision to declassify gender incongruence as a mental disorder a positive step forward

OUT LGBT Well-being welcomes the decision by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to no longer classify gender incongruence as a mental disorder.

The groundbreaking change was announced as part of the launch of the WHO's new International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD) this week, the global guide's first revision in 18 years.
