prep launch out-2017 02

On April 3, 2017, OUT’s TEN81 centre became one of three sites in South Africa to offer free PrEP to gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (MSM).

The groundbreaking development was marked with a launch event at the clinic, attended by representatives from the national Department of Health, Right to Care and Clinton Health.

The ceremony was also attended by a delegation from Kenya, including government and health officials, as well as members of the Tshwane LGBT community.

The guests were welcomed by Johan Meyer, Health Manager at TEN81, who explained that the provision of PrEP to MSM followed government’s decision last year to offer the medication to sex workers.

Meyer said that the initiative was an important step in the phased rollout of PrEP for all at risk communities and individuals across South Africa.

PrEP, if taken daily, has been proven to be highly effective in preventing HIV negative people from becoming infected with HIV. (For more information on PrEP and to get it, click here.)
